Sildenafil is the brand name for the active ingredient in the popular erectile dysfunction medication Viagra. The FDA said sildenafil is not approved for use in women, but a recent review of the health risk profile of sildenafil showed the drug is more than three times higher than the US Food and Drug Administration’s previous warning label for the same class of medications.
Sildenafil is used to treat erectile dysfunction, a condition where a man has trouble getting or keeping an erection firm enough for sex. Viagra, the brand name for the drug, is also used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, or high blood pressure in the lungs.
Sildenafil has been found to have some side effects, including headaches, flushing, indigestion and upset stomach. It may also cause vision changes, such as seeing blue or yellowish objects in the sky, to appear less appealing.
The FDA said the warning letter was issued in response to concerns by users who reported experiencing side effects from the drug, including headaches, dizziness, lightheadedness, blurred vision, and visual disturbances. More than 5,800 people have been affected.
It was also reported that patients taking sildenafil were also taking nitrates, as this is used to treat angina or chest pain.
Sildenafil is also being studied for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension.
“This letter is a reminder that consumers should not purchase and consume any medications containing sildenafil, and that it is the responsibility of the patient to obtain a prescription,” said FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb. “Consumers should exercise caution and ensure their health is assessed under the guidance of a medical professional.”
Sildenafil is the active ingredient in Viagra. It has a similar action to that of other erectile dysfunction drugs, such as Viagra and Cialis. It has also been found to increase the risk of heart attack and stroke.
